Fashion Five: Black Ivy, Mark Zuckerberg’s glowup, and Muhammad Ali’s personal style
Every Sunday, I’ll share five ideas and content usually focused on fashion and menswear.
Heyoo!
Last week, I shared my take on a Fall ‘24 capsule wardrobe in case you missed it.
Let’s jump in!
Book I’m reading
Black Ivy by Jason Jules and Graham Marsh. This fall, one of my style goals is to experiment with Black Ivy style, an African American take on Ivy style. This book, which was co-signed by Tyler the Creator, is the bible on Black Ivy. I shared a few photos from the book above.
Movie I’m watching
The Devil Wears Prada. Though not confirmed, it’s widely speculated that Meryl Streep’s character is based on Vogue’s Anna Wintour. The movie is a fascinating look into the upper echelon of the fashion industry. The clip above is a great example of that. Andy Sachs played by Anne Hathaway is a fashion outsider and gets scolded by Miranda Priestly played by Meryl Streep because of the Turqoise belt.
Blog post I’m reading
What is Mark Zuckerberg Wearing? by Brendon Holder. Mark Zuckerberg has long been associated with the tech bro uniform of plain T-shirts and hoodies. But recently, Zuckerberg has been undergoing a wardrobe transformation that coincides with Facebook’s rebrand to Meta. Is this a coincidence or not? This piece analyzes Mark Zuckerberg’s recent glow-up.
Reel I’m watching
Muhammed Ali’s personal style by @jabarisandifer. World champion heavyweight boxer and activist Muhammad Ali also has a great sense of style. He’s another example of the Black Ivy aesthetic and his personal style is as much a form of activism during the civil rights movement.
Quote I’m thinking about
What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language. - Miuccia Prada
Outfit of the Week
This is a great example of how accessories can elevate a fit.
I met Vaughan while visiting Blue In Green in SoHo and his Navajo accessories caught my eye: bolo tie, belt, and turquoise rings.
His base outfit I’d define as Western Style with the leather shoes, slacks, and pearl snap overshirt.
Remove the accessories and it’s still a great fit that anyone can rock.
Add in the accessories and now you’ve got personal style. Vaughan mentioned that he’s part native, and so wearing these pieces is a way of honoring his roots.
That’s all for this week!
Thanks again for subscribing! I’d love to hear some quick feedback on what you enjoyed and what you would like to see more of.
Have a wonderful Sunday!
See you again next week,
