Hi all!
Welcome to another edition of Fashion Five!
Let’s dive right in!
Book I’m reading
Watching New York by Johnny Cirillo. For my birthday this year, one of my friends bought me this book based on the popular Instagram account @watchingnewyork.
Here are a few of my favorite looks:
Quote I’ve been thinking about
If I put this candle in an all-white gallery space it looks like a piece of art.
If I put this candle in a garage it looks like a piece of trash.
I can either spend my time designing the candle or I can spend my time designing the room that it sits in. - Virgil Abloh
I shared this quote a few times on my personal blog and it’s been living in my head rent free. You can either design the candle or the design the room it sits in. This applies to fashion, dating, and writing a newsletter.
Brand I’m admiring
11.11. I first learned about 11.11 when I visited Independence in Chicago. They make clothing using heritage techniques and natural dyes which I find myself gravitating towards right now.
Blog I’m reading
Put This On. When I was first dabbling into menswear, my friend Minnow recommended this blog to me. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned menswear enthusiast they’ve got something for everyone.
Bakery I’m enjoying
La Ceremonia. Last Sunday, my roommate and I visited La Ceremonia in Williamsburg. We tried the mochi desserts and they also gave us complimentary chocolate chip and rainbow chip cookies! If you're in the Williamsburg area, I recommend checking out La Ceremonia.
Fit of the week
Every week, I’ll also share a fit pic from a friend, a stranger, or myself and break down why it works. Thanks Pete for the suggestion!
My friend Yeng is a writer and event host based in Brooklyn, New York.
Wearing an all-black outfit is a cheat code in fashion. No matter your skin tone, black looks great on everyone. Black garments can be dressed up for an elegant look, or dressed down for a casual look. Combined in a monochromatic all-black outfit, it gives the illusion of a slimmer and taller frame by hiding shadows and contouring the body.
All-black outfits are almost too easy at times and it takes skill to make an all-black outfit pop. Yeng does this by focusing on the details and wearing elevated pieces including a Lemaire Uniqlo U coat (I love overcoats), Acronym Cargo Trousers, and Redback boots.
That’s all for this week!
Thanks again for subscribing! As I’m just starting this out I’d love to hear some quick feedback on what you enjoyed and what you would like to see more of.
Have a wonderful Sunday!
See you again next week,
<3 James
Love Yeng's fit! And love the quote from Virgil, hadn't seen it before, might be one to hang up on my wall as a constant reminder.
